Thorness Bay Holiday Park

Posted by

Thorness Bay is a Parkdean Resorts Holiday Park based near Cowes on Isle of Wight. It’s got pretty much everything you would expect for a caravan park including places for pitching and touring, glamping tents, caravans and lodges. We stayed in a newer 3-bed extra wide Starboard Caravan during our week here.

The holiday park has a small supermarket, fish and chip shop, resturant, entertainment lounge, indoor pool with flume, outside play park, multisports pitch and a private dog friendly bay which is within walking distance of the main park. Check in is situated directly on the left as you enter the park gates.

Thorness Bay is a nice park, we just happened to go at a pretty quiet time I think or perhaps it’s not one of the busiest sites despite us going during term time. The pro’s to this included lots of space for eating, the entertainment and space to swim in the pool. Evie didn’t enjoy it as much as there weren’t many children her age to play with – but then again, term time holiday.

The private bay is mostly stones but there is a sandy area if you go left instead of right. It has some beautiful views of the solent and surrounding countryside. The right side of the bay seems to be dog friendly as we saw lots of pooches enjoying a dip in the sea.

The park really feels in the middle of nowhere although Newport is around a ten minute drive away. It’s not an ideal park for public transport as I believe just one bus services the area a day. Everything is around 30 minutes drive away including our favourite seaside town Shanklin which is perfect for a beach day. We also visited Blackgang Chine during our week away.

Thorness Bay is a small park but with plenty of caravans I imagine it’s pretty popular with older visitors as well as those that like to venture out and explore. It’s very quiet. The entertainment was good and included shows, bingo and kids clubs. It’s pretty much everything you’d expect really.

Frustratingly, we booked an extra wide caravan by the pictures shown that was within our budget and hired a travel cot for our caravan however it didn’t fit in any of the bedrooms and neither of us felt comfortable leaving Felix in the living room alone as he is still in with us at home. This was annoying as we had to make a make shift bed on the floor for him and use the sofa which wasn’t the best night’s sleep. I think we would have been better off in a lodge and would consider this for the next Parkdean resorts holiday.
